Dr. Johannes Wirges
Doctor of engineering sciences, Diploma computer scientist, Graphic designer
My working and educational background combines computer science, engineering, and graphic design. I studied computer science at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) with a focus on modeling and simulation. Afterwards I worked at the European Institute for Energy Research (EIFER). There I developed simulation interfaces and mapped data in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for electric mobility projects. During that time I wrote my doctoral thesis Planning the Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles in Cities and Regions at the Institute of Traffic Engineering at the KIT. Afterwards I completed a one-year graphic designer certificate at the Online Schule für Gestaltung (OfG). I then worked at E.ON Business Services as a Visual Analytics Engineer. Now I am offering my services as a freelancer.
Regularly I extend my skills in data visualization. I notably took courses on dashboard development and reporting by reporting impulse, on data journalism by Alberto Cairo, and on creative data visualization by Federica Fragapane.
Currently I live happily in Essen in the Ruhr region. This region used to be a center of the German coal mining and steel industry, and is now reinventing itself via startups, culture, and restaurants. It is a strongly underrated region, being with more than 5 million inhabitants in fact Europe’s fourth biggest urban agglomeration behind London, Paris, and Madrid.
In my free time I follow my interest in everything reading books, visiting museums, and traveling.
